Fancy Cuts and Shape Diamonds

The term "Fancy Cut" diamonds refers to cuts and shapes that are modified versions of popular cuts. Fancy cuts can generally be grouped into four categories: modified brilliants, step cuts, mixed cuts, and rose cuts.

Asscher Cut

Although square, rather than rectangular, this beautifully unique shape is similar to the emerald-cut. The Asscher cut shape has a pavilion that is cut with rectangular facets in the same style as the emerald-cut. The Asscher-cut shape highlights the clarity of the diamond and in lower colour stones, colour may be slightly visible in its corners.

Cushion Shape

This unique shape has been popular for more than a century. Cushion-cut diamonds (also known as "pillow-cut" diamonds) have rounded corners and larger facets to increase their brilliance. These larger facets highlight the diamond's clarity. Cushion-cut diamonds are available in shapes ranging from square to rectangular.

The Radiant Cut

The Radiant can either be cut as a square or rectangle. The Radiant has a strong look with a unique type sparkle, differing from Emerald and Princess Cuts. Trimmed corners are the signature of this fancy-shaped diamond, and they also make the diamond very versatile. A radiant-cut looks equally beautiful set with either baguette or round side-diamonds. When choosing a colour grade, consider that while the price of a lower colour fancy-shaped diamond is exceptional, colour may be slightly visible in its corners.

The Pear Shape

The pear shaped brilliant diamond is based upon the traditional configuration of the round brilliant diamond. More than other fancy shapes, length-to-width ratio is a matter of taste when it comes to pear shaped diamonds. Because pears may be used for engagement rings, suites in necklaces, dangles in earrings, and integral parts of custom designs, a wide variety of shapes is considered desirable.

The Oval Cut

The oval cut is a particularly beautiful shape and if well proportioned gives great scintillation and fire. A well cut oval diamond can be almost as bright as a well cut Brilliant or round shaped diamond as the angles for cutting are closer to that of a brilliant cut diamond.

The Marquise Shape

The Marquise is a slender striking cut if well proportioned and popular for "up market" designer pieces. The shape lends it self to being visually bigger with a bigger table spread for carat weight than traditional cuts, it has a line of beauty that can be used running up and down the finger and so is an excellent option if you want a big, long look for less money.
