Emerald Cut Diamonds

The Emerald Cut Diamond is a rectangular shape with cut corners. It is known as a step cut because its concentric broad, flat planes resemble stair steps. When purchasing an emerald cut diamond, it's extremely important to pay attention to quality and to select the highest grade stone you can afford. Because of the 'openess' of the cut, flaws, color weakness, and an inferior cut are more evident to the naked eye than in a multi-facetted cut such as the round brilliant.

The Emerald cut uses a series of flat rectangular facets stepping down off the table to give it a unique brilliance, quite different to that of a Round or curved shaped cut. The flat planes of the outside edges allow for a variety of side stones shapes. Typical pairings would be two or three side baguettes, two half-moons, and other smaller Emeralds, but not Trillions, as their sparkle makes the centre emerald cut look flat.

Baguette Diamonds

Rectangular or oblong diamonds are usually called baguettes, from the French word 'baguette'.A baguette diamond is a 'step' cut, similar to an emerald cut, but without the mitred corners which make them octagonal rather than oblong.

Baguettes are a popular choice in channel set eternity rings, and can also be tapered at one end, to sit either side of a solitaire.
